Cabbiness Engineering was contracted with the City of Oklahoma City to redesign Anderson Road in 2014 by widening the existing two lane, open roadway section to a four lane rural arterial roadway.

The project scope included the widening and reconstruction of the existing roadway, new storm sewer and other drainage improvements, new traffic signals, bridge deck rehabilitation, right-of-way mapping and preparation of supporting property acquisition documents and the coordination of public and private utility line relocations that conflicted with the proposed design.

The new roadway was designed such that a phased construction approach could be implemented by the contractor to keep portions of the project accessible during construction. The sequencing plan had to account for local fire safety units stationed along Anderson Road as well as Oklahoma County District #2 headquarters. Residences, businesses, churches and schools also utilize Anderson Road as their main access to Interstate 240. Thus, construction sequencing was an extremely important task assigned to the design team for this project.

The roadway design included a four lane roadway with a fifth lane for turning movements at the intersections. However, one of the most challenging design aspects was to address the driveways for businesses and residents because of the steep roadway grades along SE 59th Street and SE 74th Street intersections. These challenging grade issues were overcome by lowering Anderson Road at the intersections to meet current design criteria of intersection site and stopping site distances.
